Abstract

Understanding public opinion is integral to modern democracies. It shapes public policies; it helps politicians to connect with their audiences; it reveals underlying issues that are of utmost importance for political decision-makers. Social research and opinion polls give people the opportunity to express their views regularly on different topics and provide an efficient way to measure public opinion. The purpose of this book is to illustrate how public opinion polling matters in politics, in the public sphere and more generally in our globalized economies. The book provides an international and up to date perspecive on public opinion polling. It is based on studies from more than 50 countries across the world and in-depth case studies from the United States; Canada, Germany, Great Britain, France, Norway, the Western Balkans, India, Indonesia, New Zealand and the Philippines.

Abstract

Thought-provoking reflection on culture, colonialism, and the remainders of empire in Belgium after 1960 The degree to which the late colonial era affected Europe has been long underappreciated, and only recently have European countries started to acknowledge not having come to terms with decolonisation. In Belgium, the past two decades have witnessed a growing awareness of the controversial episodes in the country’s colonial past. This volume examines the long-term effects and legacies of the colonial era on Belgium after 1960, the year the Congo gained its independence, and calls into question memories of the colonial past by focusing on the meaning and place of colonial monuments in public space. The book foregrounds the enduring presence of “empire” in everyday Belgian life in the form of permanent colonial markers in bronze and stone, lieux de mémoire of the country’s history of overseas expansion. By means of photographs and explanations of major pro-colonial memorials, as well as several obscure ones, the book reveals the surprising degree to which Belgium became infused with a colonialist spirit during the colonial era. Another key component of the analysis is an account of the varied ways in which both Dutch- and French-speaking Belgians approached the colonial past after 1960, treating memorials variously as objects of veneration, with indifference, or as symbols to be attacked or torn down. The book provides a thought-provoking reflection on culture, colonialism, and the remainders of empire in Belgium after 1960.

Abstract

There have been huge advances in robot technology in the last few years. More and more "humanlike" robots are being developed in labs for a wide variety of medical, manufacturing, and commercial uses. These "smart" people lookalikes are being designed to help with household chores, as office workers, to perform tasks in space and in other dangerous environments, and to assist in schools and hospitals. Humanlike robots, in other words, are coming, and they may fundamentally change the way we live, even the way we view ourselves. Will robots that look and act a lot like us be a threat to us? Or will they blend into our culture and eventually even be considered peers? Will they have feelings along with their artificial skin and metal bones? Will they act ethically? Are we taking sufficient care to make sure that they do? These questions and many more are posed by the authors of this important book, which demands that we take steps now to insure that the technology doesn’t lead us into potentially dangerous scenarios with a "species" we have created. What laws will be needed to keep things under control? Should robots be allowed to store private and personal information in their circuits or be given freedom to act on their own? Do we want robots as teachers, police officers, doctors, and accountants, or do we want them to only do menial tasks? Will there be "renegade" robots that set out to harm people? Will robot soldiers increase the chance of war? There are no easy answers to these questions. But the time to look for answers is now.

Abstract

This book presents an entirely new approach to professional learning based on perspectives of the knowledge society and, in particular, an interpretation of Knorr Cetina’s work on scientific ‘epistemic cultures’. Starting with a conceptual chapter and followed by a suite of empirical studies from accountancy, education, nursing and software engineering, the book elaborates how: a) knowledge production and circulation take distinct forms in those fields; b) how the knowledge objects of practice in those fields engross and engage professionals and, in the process, people and knowledge are transformed by this engagement. By foregrounding an explicit concern for the role of knowledge in professional learning, the book goes much farther than the current fashion for describing ‘practice-based learning’. It will therefore be of considerable interest to the research, policy, practitioner and student communities involved with professional education/learning or interested in innovation and knowledge development in the professions.

Abstract

The topic of migration has become particularly contentious in national and international debates. Media have a discernable impact on overall societal attitudes towards this phenomenon. Polls show time and again that immigration is one of the most important issues occupying people's minds. This book examines the dynamic interplay between media representations of migrants and refugees on the one hand and the governmental and societal (re)actions to these on the other. Largely focusing on Belgium and Sweden, this collection of interdisciplinary research essays attempts to unravel the determinants of people's preferences regarding migration policy, expectations towards newcomers, and economic, humanitarian and cultural concerns about immigration's effect on the majority population's life. Whilst migrants and refugees remain voiceless and highly underrepresented in the legacy media, this volume allows their voices to be heard.

Abstract

Much has been written about the economic and political problems of countries that are in the process of changing from centrally planned systems to market systems. Most studies have focused on the economic, legal, political and sociological problems these economies have had to face during the transition period. However, not much has been written about the dramatic changes that have to be made to the accounting and financial system of a transition economy. This book was written to help fill that gap. Taxation and Public Finance in Transition and Developing Economies is the third in a series to examine accounting and financial system reform in transition economies. The first book used Russia as a case study. The second volume in the series examined some additional aspects of the reform in Russia and also looked at the accounting and financial system reform efforts that are being made in Ukraine, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Armenia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The present volume examines taxation and public finance in transition and developing economies. It is divided into three parts. Part 1 consists of four general studies on various aspects of tax compliance, corruption, budget efficiency and fiscal policy. Part 2 includes nine comparative studies of various aspects of public finance. Part 3 consists of 23 country and regional studies of countries in Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa.

Abstract

Cancer is more than a biological disease. Cultural factors are involved at every stage in the journey through cancer, from prevention to palliative care. Based upon recent studies from the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States, Culture and Cancer Care examines a number of cultural themes in relation to cancer, including:. The disparity of rates of cancer among different ethnic groups. Culture and screening. Breaking bad news and communication. Cultural variations in emotional responses to cancer. Cultural variability in cancer treatments and the influence on prognosis. Palliative care a
